Can’t Get Over Sara Bareilles’ New Single

    September 23, 2011 /

When Kaleidoscope Heart was released last year, I fell in love with the sweet vocals and charming lyrical style of Sara Bareilles. Of course she had me in 2007 with her massive hit “Love Song”, but until her sophomore LP it wasn’t clear where her place would be in this fickle industry. Now, with two hit albums under her belt, a seat at the judges table on NBC’s hit series The Sing Off and a catchy new single impacting radio and quickly climbing the charts, she’s captured the hearts of millions. Her latest single “Gonna Get Over You” comes with a new version of the track featuring the unstoppable Ryan Tedder.…

    Artist To Watch: Chancellor Warhol

    September 13, 2011 /

When I moved to Nashville last year, there was a stigma: country music was king. But when Chancellor Warhol proclaims “the King is in the building” on the new single, “Elvis”, from his sophomore LP The Silver Factory, I believed him. In Nashville, the hip-hop scene is one of two things. Chancellor Warhol is neither of them. His indie flare keeps him relevant with the city’s tastemakers and trendsetters, while his clever rhymes and strong lyrics give him enough street-cred to go up against hip-hop’s finest. His first solo record, Japanese Lunchbox, was released last year and set the bar for his unique electro-rap style that urges listeners to the dance floor.…

"My Humps" As You’ve Never Heard It

    September 8, 2011 /

I stumbled upon this video this morning and it was too good to not share. Jeff Tweedy, of the band Wilco, stopped by a party to celebrate the launch of Dan Sinker’s novel The Fucking Epic Twitter Quest of Mayor Emanuel. And while fans were bewildered by the frontman’s appearance, they soon erupted into laughter when Tweedy chose, not to play one of the new tunes from his band’s upcoming release, but instead to recite the lyrics to the Black Eyed Peas‘ “My Humps”. While it is sure to make you laugh, it may forever change your view of one of your favorite party tunes. So watch with caution, but…

    Clarkson Vs. Coldplay

    September 7, 2011 /

Kelly Clarkson announced via Twitter a few weeks ago that her fifth album would be released on October 24th.  Yup, that’s right, she’s taking on the juggernaut Coldplay. This afternoon, Clarkson tweeted again revealing the album’s artwork. So we clearly know who will win on the charts, but who’s winning the creative battle?  You decide.  VS.

    August 24, 2011 /

It’s been a hot second (and here in Nashville, I mean that a bit more literally than I had hoped) since I’ve updated you with some new tunes and the latest and greatest from the music scene. I promise when you see what’s to come you’re going to see it’s been well worth the wait. But, I still feel like I’ve left you to face this hot summer without any new music to cool you off. So as we start to dream of cooler times and the crisp air that fall is to bring, I bring you a glimpse of what’s to come with a first listen of Ryan Adams‘ new…

No Doubt Prepares First New Disc in a Decade

    June 28, 2011 /

If it hasn’t become painfully obvious, my updates have been few and far between lately due to some exciting new ventures I am working on. And while I look forward to introducing you to them in the coming weeks, I am doing my best to bring you the most relevant and up-to-date music news as possible. Tragic Kingdom is active on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr (our micro-version of the site, which includes all our content from here and more from inside my crazy mind).  And it’s there that you’ll find Rolling Stone‘s interview with No Doubt about their upcoming release.

Tragic Kingdom Presents: The Pretty Reckless Videography

    June 12, 2011 /

From jaw-dropping goth rock to over-synthed pop beats and honky tonk country crooning to piano-driven rock hooks, it’s no secret that my musical influences have ranged all over the map this year. But when I introduced The Pretty Reckless last month, it was clear that I had inducted a new staple into the Tragic Kingdom family. Much like the inspiration for this blog, Light Me Up is an inspirational album from front to back. With Taylor Momsen leading the charge, the band delivers one of the most relevant albums of the year. But the question remains, why hasn’t America – the place where Momsen holds a lead spot on one of…

    So Good, It’s Criminal

    May 30, 2011 /

Since I discovered that Taylor Momsen was more than just the latest tabloid-fodder wannabe from the CW’s hit show Gossip Girl, I’ve spent a lot of time digging into some of her finest musical moments with her band The Pretty Reckless. When I featured the band earlier this month, I noted the comparisons of Momsen’s voice to the smooth rasp and deep tone that Fiona Apple delivered on some of finest and biggest commercial hits. Imagine my excitement when I stumbled across this gem — Momsen doing a live cover of Apple’s biggest hit, “Criminal” … and might I say, doing it flawlessly.
