You announce to your friends and family that you’re getting married and the next question asked, beyond the initial details of the day, is always “where’s the honeymoon?.” honeymoon destinations
For Joe and I, we traded jetting off to a tropical week-long getaway for some time relaxing in our new home and wrapping up quality time with family that extended their trips to explore Nashville. Whether staycationing or flying to the most exclusive destinations around the globe, your honeymoon is the time to escape from everyone and spend time with your spouse to celebrate. It’s about you. And if you’re going to do it, do it big.
From scouring some of my favorite travel blogs and Insta-accounts, I’ve compiled a list of my picks for the best honeymoon destinations this year (and beyond). Complete with some drool-worthy photos that might have you running down the aisle.
2018’s Top Honeymoon Destinations
The Serengeti, Tanzania
Home to Serengeti National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro, the northern half of Tanzania is filled with amazing wildlife and beautiful scenery. The Four Seasons Lodge Serengeti or Serengeti Tanzania Bush Camp offer safari rides for guests to explore the landscape and get close to giraffes, elephants, and lions. The best time to visit is between the months of June and October, which are the driest to explore and relax the outdoors.
Angra dos Reis, Brazil
About a two-hour drive west of Rio de Janeiro Angra dos Reis encompasses hundreds of small islands off the Brazilian coast. Golden Tulip Angra dos Reis or Hotel Portogalo sit right on the ocean, and the average nightly rates in the area are super affordable, usually averaging less than $100. For prices that cheap, you can enjoy your honeymoon worry-free, relaxing on one of the many of beaches, hiking the nearby coastal forests, or exploring the downtown area loaded with restaurants and shopping.
The Riviera Maya
The Riviera is a stretch of the Mexican coastline between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, just south of Cancun. The Yucatan Peninsula offers a type of honeymoon for every couple — from all-inclusive resorts close and downtown nightlife to private retreats to relax and rejuvenate. Dreams in Tulum, Las Villas in Akumal, or Barcelo in Riveria Maya paired with the white, sandy beaches are great options for de-stressing after the wedding day.
Kep, Cambodia
Get out of your comfort zone and jump into some rich history and culture, while getting off the grid at the southernmost tip of Cambodia. The Kep activities include sailing on the calm water of the Gulf of Thailand and hiking through butterfly-filled rain forests. And up until the 1970s, Kep was a popular resort town for wealthy French and Cambodian travelers, and a lot of the original architecture still remains for culture lovers.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole Valley is the perfect destination if you envision spending your post-wedding days on the ski slopes by day and curled up next to a fireplace at night. Surrounded by three different mountain resorts, your days can be filled with outdoor activities from the slopes and the terrain parks to the aerial gondola rides across the valley. Retreat back to Rusty Parrot or Four Seasons Jackson Hole for a spa day to cap this perfectly private getaway.
Arles, France
The city of Arles is a true city, with a rich history of inspiring some of most well-known artists with the city’s Rhone River views. The wetlands of Camargue sit just south of Arles and are home to one of the largest flamingo populations, wild horses, and roaming black bulls — you can explore the best of both city and nature. Arles and Camargue Natural Regional Park are located on the south shore of France between Montpellier and Marseille.
