First Listen: The Civil Wars "The One That Got Away"
Nashville’s Cinderella story, The Civil Wars, were on top of their game: Grammy’s, praise from even the harshest critics and a hit album. Then, with very little notice, it was over. John Paul White and Joy Williams announced their hiatus late last year, which quickly spread, and it seemed the band who were about to secure their place in music history had ended.
Earlier this year though, the band announced that their second album – the first on Sony Music – would indeed be released. And while fans and critics rejoiced, it was surely a question if the duo, who were clearly broken, would have the same chemistry that won them a spot on our permanent playlist. It’s unclear how the band will promote their sophomore release, if at all, but after hearing the lead single “The One That Got Away,” it is clear that the chemistry remains.
Perhaps this album will be just what the doctor ordered for these two to find compromise in their obvious creative differences. Something that I, along with millions who fell in love with their hauntingly beautiful talent, would love. The Civil Wars will release their self-titled sophomore LP on August 6th with its first single, “The One That Got Away.”
