Kris Allen

It’s No Surprise

American Idol runner up, Adam Lambert, continues to take the spotlight off this year’s winner, Kris Allen, as he graces the cover of Rolling Stone this week. The new issue promises to feature “The Liberation of Adam Lambert”, which apparently means focusing on his sexuality, rather than his career. And it comes as no surprise, at least to the majority of the population, when Adam Lambert announced in the article his sexual preference, saying “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay”. Lambert says he’s proud of who he is, but that he’s “trying to be a singer, not a civil right leader”.

In the article, Lambert also opens up about his childhood, his experimentation with drugs, and his crush on fellow Idol contestant, Kris Allen, with whom he shared a room with during the show. “They put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He’s the one guy I found attractive in the whole group on the show: nice, nonchalant, pretty, and totally my type – except that he has a wife. I mean he’s open minded and liberal, but he’s definitely 100% straight”, says Lambert. Uh, duh! And as for the drugs, he started smoking pot in Germany, when he was on the European tour of “Hair”. It was there when he first dyed his hair black and tried Ecstasy, but says his limits are with cocaine because “that drug is such a reflection of the lack of self-esteem and control people have over their lives.”

So, there you have it; confirmation of what was already very obvious. And although Lambert’s announcement came as no shock, it is clear that he is changing the face of Idol as we once knew it. Never before, this close after a finale, has so much been revealed about a contestant in regards to sexuality and drugs. Think Jim Verraros, Jessica Sierra, Nikki McKibbon, and, of course, Clay Aiken.
