Legal eagles have long held a special place on our TV screens. It’s hard to think of a time in the past forty years when there wasn’t a successful TV show (or two) about lawyers on our screens. Alongside the police procedural, it is one of the most enduring TV genres.
Its popularity is a combination of the historically strong legal industry in the country, with a great many well-respected law firms, click here to see some of them, and viewer’s insatiable appetite for crime drama and bringing people to justice.
We’ve taken a look back through the TV archives to look at some of the best TV law firms past and present.
Gracing our screens between 1984 to 1996, LA Law centered around the goings-on at the law firm of McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney, and Kuzak. It made household names of Harry Hamlin, Corbin Bernsen, and Jimmy Smits as well as being responsible for some pretty awful double-breasted power suits.
The series that catapulted Calista Flockhart into the mainstream, Ally McBeal centered on Flockhart’s McBeal as she built her legal career, managed her increasingly quirky social life, and tried to work with her ex-boyfriend she still has feelings for, and his new wife.
Even before Megan Markle became a member of the British Royal Family, Suits was making quite a name for itself. Following the cutthroat world of corporate law with shark Harvey Specter and his young associate Mike Ross.
So good they made it twice. From 1957 to 1966, Raymond Burr played the iconic TV defense lawyer, helping those who were in impossible situations. It has since been rebooted for TV in a much grittier, violent incarnation starring Matthew Rhys.
Better Call Saul
After his scene-stealing turn in Breaking Bad, lawyer Saul Goodman got his own prequel, telling the story of how lawyer Jimmy McGill became a lawyer to all manner of criminals and Saul Goodman.
The show has been widely lauded for its fantastic writing and acting, with some saying Better Call Saul is even better than Breaking Bad.
The Good Wife
Starring the always fantastic Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife focuses on Alicia Florrick, a housewife and mother who returns to her career in law after her husband, the Cook County State’s Attorney gets embroiled in all manner of sex and corruption scandals.
Legal comedy-drama from the creator of LA Law, David E. Kelley. It stars James Spader and William Shatner as a couple of morally ambiguous attorney’s. It ran for five seasons between 2004-2008 and was a much needed comedic take on the legal sector.
